What did ancient Egyptians eat? We will try to understand why Herodotus defined this land “the gift of the Nile” and what conditions allowed for the development of a thriving civilization. We will observe ancient Egyptians’ gardens, their products and the food on their tables. Many of these observations are possible thanks to the materials found in the tombs. Through refined rites of passage, death was not the end but a new beginning. Stelae show banquets and funerary formulas describe a magical offer including bread, beer, birds and cattle to ensure perpetual life. Embarking on a fascinating journey between life and death, we will try to understand why food was fundamental to ensure the survival of body and soul.
